Your first ski day in Kyrgyzstan: rental, clothing and lessons

Prepare for your first day on the slopes: choose equipment, book an instructor and plan without rushing. Includes a downloadable PDF packing checklist.

What to book in advance

Tell the ski school that this is your first time on skis or a snowboard. Ask about the lesson language, private or group format, duration, meeting point, and whether rental and the nursery lift are included. For a child, give their age and ask about the school's restrictions.

Allow time to collect and try on equipment. Do not buy the most expensive lift pass before speaking to the instructor: a suitable learning area usually matters more for the first lesson.

Clothing for an active day

Wear a base layer, an insulating layer and outerwear that protects against wind and wet snow. Wear one pair of suitable ski socks and pack a dry spare pair. Several thick pairs can make boots fit poorly.

Bring gloves, a neck warmer, goggles or glasses suited to the weather and sunscreen. Tuck away scarves and loose straps so they cannot catch in equipment. Keep dry clothes for the journey home.

What to check at the rental shop

Ask the staff to help fit your boots: your feet should be held securely without significant pain or numbness. Try them with the socks you will ski in. If they already feel uncomfortable indoors, change them before heading out.

Have a rental specialist adjust the bindings, giving your weight, height and ability honestly. Inspect the equipment together and record existing damage. Choose a correctly fitting helmet and make sure it works with your goggles.

Keep your receipt, deposit terms and return deadline. Ask what the package includes: helmets and other accessories may cost extra.

A plan for your first day

Start with a lesson on the nursery slope. Ask to learn how to stop, control speed, fall and use the particular lift you will be taking. Discuss moving to a harder slope with your instructor.

After the lesson, take a break indoors, eat and assess your energy. Finishing early is fine. Do not squeeze in another run if you can no longer control your skis or board confidently.

Simple rules on the slopes

Adjust your speed to visibility, snow conditions and other people. Look uphill before setting off or joining a run; do not stop in a narrow place or where people above cannot see you. Follow signs and closures.

For a first trip, use open, groomed runs. Tracks beyond a barrier are not permission to ski off-piste. Save the resort rescue service's number; in an emergency in Kyrgyzstan, you can call 112. Give the resort name, the part of the slope and a nearby landmark.

Pre-trip checklist

  • Confirm the lesson, meeting point and nursery-area ticket.
  • Pack base layers, insulation and protective outerwear.
  • Bring gloves, goggles, spare socks and dry clothes.
  • Fit boots and a helmet; have the rental shop adjust equipment.
  • Bring water, a snack, your phone and a power bank.
  • Save the resort rescue number and rental return deadline.
