The most popular destinations for winter hiking

In winter most hiking in Kyrgyzstan is concentrated around a few areas: they're easier to reach on winter roads, there are places to warm up and stay overnight, and there are routes for every level. Here's where people go most often — and why.

1. Ala-Archa

The undisputed leader: 40 minutes by car from Bishkek, asphalt all the way to the mountaineering camp, and routes from an hour's walk along the river to winter ascents of 4,500-metre peaks. At weekends clubs and groups gather here — it's easy to find companions.

  • Getting there: a taxi or your own car from Bishkek, about 40 km.
  • What to see: the Ala-Archa gorge, the Ak-Sai waterfall (for the well prepared), spruce forests.
  • How long: one day.

2. Karakol and around

The capital of winter holidays on Issyk-Kul. Skiing during the day, and the next day a hike to Jeti-Oguz or up to the Altyn-Arashan hot springs. There are many guesthouses and guides here who work all year round.

  • Getting there: about 6–7 hours by car from Bishkek, or by minibus.
  • What to see: Jeti-Oguz, Altyn-Arashan, the Karakol gorge.
  • How long: 2–4 days.

3. Issyk-Ata

Hot radon springs 77 km from Bishkek. The popular format is a short hike up the snowy gorge followed by a soak in warm water. It suits a group with mixed levels of fitness.

  • Getting there: about 1.5 hours by car.
  • How long: one day, or a weekend at the sanatorium.

4. Chon-Kemin

A national park in a wide valley between ranges, about 2.5 hours from Bishkek. In winter there are guesthouses with a banya, horse rides and walks, and in the side gorges routes to frozen waterfalls.

  • How long: 1–2 days.

5. Issyk-Kul in winter

The lake doesn't freeze and there's little snow on the south shore, so you can hike here even when avalanche danger is high in the high mountains. The Skazka and Konorchek canyons, empty beaches and views of the snowy ranges across the water make a winter trip of their own kind.

  • How long: 1–3 days.

How to choose

One day and little experience — Ala-Archa, Issyk-Ata or Chunkurchak. A long weekend — Karakol or Chon-Kemin. If avalanche danger is high up in the mountains — the south shore of Issyk-Kul.
