The most difficult winter routes in Kyrgyzstan
- Difficulty: Hard
- Duration: 1–4 days
- Season: Winter

These routes are for people with more than one winter season behind them. They're beautiful, but mistakes here are costly: avalanches, frostbite, a night in the frost with no signal. If you're just starting out, save this article for later and do these routes with an experienced leader.
The Ratsek hut (Ala-Archa)
A hut at about 3,400 m by the Ak-Sai glacier — a popular day trip in summer, a serious hike in winter. The trail climbs beside the Ak-Sai waterfall and crosses several avalanche chutes that become deadly after snowfall.
- Level: difficult. Gain: about 1,300 m from the mountaineering camp.
- Gear: crampons, an avalanche kit, a warm sleeping bag for the night in the hut.
- When: only at avalanche danger level 1–2 and in settled weather.
Uchitel peak, 4,527 m
One of the best-known peaks of Ala-Archa. The winter ascent starts from the Ratsek hut and goes over the Ak-Sai glacier. The easiest route is graded 1B in summer, but in winter frost down to −30 °C, wind and short days make it considerably harder.
- Level: expert.
- You need: mountaineering training, a rope, ice gear, acclimatization.
Korona and Free Korea
Korona peak (about 4,860 m) and Free Korea peak (about 4,740 m) have technically difficult routes on rock and ice. Winter ascents are made by experienced climbing teams; for a hiker this is terrain you don't enter without sports training.
Ala-Kul lake over the pass
In summer it's the most popular trek near Karakol. In winter the climb to the lake at about 3,500 m and the Ala-Kul pass (about 3,900 m) become a route for prepared groups: deep snow, avalanche slopes above the trail, nights at −20 °C and below. There's no signal on most of the way.
- Level: difficult, 3–4 days.
- Gear: snowshoes, crampons, an avalanche kit, a winter tent, a gas stove with winter gas mix.
Son-Kul in winter
The high mountain lake at about 3,000 m freezes over completely in winter, and the frost holds at around −30 °C. The yurt camps are closed, and the roads over the passes are often blocked by snow. A winter expedition to Son-Kul means full self-sufficiency: a tent or an arrangement with the herders who winter there, a fuel supply and a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
- Level: difficult, with the emphasis on self-sufficiency and cold rather than technique.
The Adygene gorge
A side gorge of Ala-Archa with the climbers' memorial cemetery and a way up to the glacier. In winter the path to the upper campsites runs under slopes where avalanches come down regularly.
How to prepare
- Take an avalanche safety course and practise with a transceiver.
- Build experience on intermediate routes in the same area.
- Go in a group of at least three people with an experienced leader.
- Leave your route plan and expected return time with someone below; in an emergency call 112.
- Keep a backup plan and turn back without regret: the mountain isn't going anywhere.
We've put a memo on each route — altitude, risks, gear — into a PDF.
